Frequently Asked Questions

    • Q: The app seems to be working, but nothing registers on my computer.  How can I fix that?
    • A: Because Scanalyzer uses your network, getting connected can be a challenge.  Try the following:
      1. Make sure your phone is on a wifi connection that can reach your computer.
        • You may want to rule out network problems by creating an Ad Hoc Network (Mac or PC).
        • If you choose to join or create a new network, please restart the desktop software.
      2. Double check the computer's IP Address that is shown on the desktop software.
      3. Open port 8000 on any firewall software on your computer.
      4. Disable any keystroke macro programs or extensions.
      5. Try relaunching the desktop software with just one network connection enabled.
      6. Restart your computer.
      7. If you are unable to resolve the problem with these steps, contact help.

    • Q: I'm concerned about security.  What can I do to secure Scanalyzer?
    • A: Scanalyzer relies on your network's security rather than including encryption and authentication inside the app.  This means you get the fastest possible performance out of Scanalyzer, but it is your responsibility to secure your computer.  We have the following suggestions that may be useful:
      • Configure your firewall to allow only your phone to communicate on the listening port (8000).
      • Use a VPN connection with secure protocols like IPSec to encrypt traffic.
      • Turn off the Scanalyzer desktop software when not in use.
      • Use antivirus and security software to protect yourself.
      • Consider using an Ad Hoc network for scanning tasks.

    • Q: I want to use Scanalyzer when my phone is not connected to my WiFi network.  How do get that working?
    • A: You can use your phone's data plan to send scans back to your computer with some network setup.  Here's what you (or your networking people) need to do:
      1. Get a public IP address and keep it handy.
      2. Configure your network router and firewall.
        • Configure NAT to map your public IP address to your computer's IP address.
        • Allow traffic from your phone's IP address to go to your computer's IP address on port 8000.
        • Recommended: Set up a VPN connection, IPSec or other secure protocols.
      3. Configure the Scanalyzer app on your phone with the public IP address from step one.
      4. Test it out!  That's all there is to it, but if you have any trouble contact us for help.

    • Q: Can I use Scanalyzer with an iPod Touch, iPad 2, or older iPhone?
    • A: Yes!  Scanalyzer will run on any iOS device with a camera and a network connection.  Be aware of the following limitations when choosing a device:
      • Devices with better cameras can read smaller barcodes and do so more easily.
      • Some enhanced features like, location awareness, may be limited by device.

    • Q: Why can't I get Scanalyzer to read my barcode?
    • A: Lots of things can prevent you from reading a barcode, but here are some things to keep in mind:
      • Barcode Length - Very long barcodes may not fit into the camera's field of view at a readable distance.
      • Barcode Resolution - Smaller barcodes may require better cameras.
      • Distortion - Dirty lenses or damaged barcodes may read incorrectly or not read at all.
      • Distance - Holding the camera too close or too far from the barcode.
      • Orientation - Not framing the barcode squarely on the screen may prevent it from being read.
      • Focus - Images that out of focus.
      • Glare - Glare from bright light or backlit displays.
      • Lighting - Poor lighting can prevent the scanner from reading properly.
      • Motion - Motion that causes the camera image to blur become unfocused.
      • Symbology - The barcode type.  If your barcode type is not supported, contact us.
